The Incident

Loss of oil reported from a neighbouring properties oil feed line. Significant hydrocarbon odours recorded in the rear garden of our client. The neighbouring oil storage tank had been displaced on it’s plinth causing the oil feed line to fail. An estimated 300 litres of oil had been lost to ground impacting neighbouring properties with gross contamination discovered in the soils to 1.0 m below ground level. The local authority had attended and retrieved samples due to the town abstraction well situated less than 1km from the spill source.

The Solution

The Seed Environmental team were called in to carry out a site investigation to assess the extent and severity of the contamination plume. While on site Seed’s OFTEC registered technician repaired the oil feed line at the neighbouring property to ensure that the elderly couple had heating maintained and to ensure that there was no further loss of oil. Seed also delineated the contamination plume and began remedial excavation works.

The Outcome

Seed devised a remedial programme to excavate grossly contaminated soils while checking for any possible migration to the water table. Seed confirmed that the impact was localised and following successful validation sampling began a programme of reinstatement works which included a new OFTEC compliant bunded oil storage tank with a new underground oil feed line placed in protective ducting.
