Internal Kerosene Loss
Seed were asked by an insurance client to respond to an internal kerosene loss from a failed oil transfer line in a domestic property, with a resulting VOC and odour intrusion to the property’s living space. The insured party reported to Seed that the entire 1,300L oil storage tank, which was full to capacity at the time of the loss, had been emptied.
Seed attended site to find elevated internal TVOC concentrations and evidence of a failure to the oil transfer line, in the form of a small hole, adjacent to the property’s range cooker. They were also delighted to find that, upon inspection, the oil storage tank was full, and that the tank’s analogue watchman gauge was faulty and had incorrectly indicated that the tank was empty.
However, a small fuel loss had still occurred internally and from the faulty oil transfer line. In consideration of this, and the faulty tank isolation tap, Seed immediately initiated the transfer of fuel out of the original oil tank and into bunded storage to prevent further loss. A vapour extraction unit was installed within the property’s kitchen to reduce ambient VOC vapours to within acceptable levels, leaving the customer satisfied until such a time as remediation can be completed.
