Significant Structural and Remedial Works Following Internal Kerosene Loss

Seed were instructed by an Insurance client to attend an unoccupied domestic property where a loss of an unknown volume of kerosene had occurred from the internal boiler within the kitchen. Ambient TVOC concentrations of up to 102ppm were recorded throughout the house with a very strong hydrocarbon odour and staining to the concrete floor and external brickwork. Seed initially carried out intrusive investigations to establish the contamination plume to aid in developing a remediation strategy.

Seed carried out remedial works which included removal of the kitchen concrete floor, an internal excavation, internal and external masonry replacement and chemical in-situ treatments; with validations confirming that all grossly contaminated soils and building structures had been removed. A hydrocarbon resistant gas membrane was installed during reinstatement of the concrete floor and collection of an ambient air sample confirmed an absence of detectable kerosene vapour in the house, supported by an absence of hydrocarbon odour. The plumbing and electrics were reinstated with a new kitchen installed, finished with decoration and new flooring.

The homeowner confirmed they were very pleased with the standard of works carried out by Seed.
